Matthew 2: 23
23 and went and settled in a town called Nazareth, in order that these words spoken through the Prophets might be fulfilled, "He shall be called a Nazarene."
vs ISAIAH 11:1
Let's think about this sentence and reflect - if someone is doing something specifically to fulfill a prophecy, does it count? If a prophecy had declared that he would be a Samaritan would Jesus have moved to Samaria and claimed that prophecy? Next - according to the NT the prophecy says that he would be called a 'Nazarene'. Well only someone BORN in Nazareth would be a 'Nazarene' not someone moving there just to fulfill a prophecy. Finally, and the most important, as far as anyone can find - there is no recorded prophecy that the Messiah would be "called a Nazarene." The closest anyone comes to is Isaiah 11:1 because the word "shoot" is similar in its original language to the name "Nazareth". Does this really work for anyone? Okay - let's look at Isaiah 11:1-9 so you haven't wasted your time here.
ISAIAH 11:1-9
1 Out of the stump of David's family will grow a shoot – yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root. 2 And the Spirit of the LORD will rest on him – the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. 3 He will delight in obeying the LORD. He will never judge by appearance, false evidence, or hearsay. 4 He will defend the poor and the exploited. He will rule against the wicked and destroy them with the breath of his mouth. 5 He will be clothed with fairness and truth. 6 In that day the wolf and the lamb will live together; the leopard and the goat will be at peace. Calves and yearlings will be safe among lions, and a little child will lead them all. 7 The cattle will graze among bears. Cubs and calves will lie down together. And lions will eat grass as the livestock do. 8 Babies will crawl safely among poisonous snakes. Yes, a little child will put its hand in a nest of deadly snakes and pull it out unharmed. 9 Nothing will hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain. And as the waters fill the sea, so the earth will be filled with people who know the LORD.
Well let's examine this prophecy and compare it to Jesus. Verse 1 emphasizes a descendant of David yet Jesus was only a descendant of David on his STEP father's side. Verses 2-5 are a vague description of some nice, godly person. These verses could as easily refer to Ghandhi, Mother Theresa or Florence Nighingale as they can refer to Jesus. We see nothing in these verses of the important specifics of Jesus' life such as the insemination by God, birth from a virgin, miracle working, crucifixion or resurrection. All we see is a smart, godly man who will one day rule Israel, like Soloman. Verses 6-9 and beyond describe yet another utopia. Even though the scripture DOES specifically say "In that day"; verses 6 and up certainly were not fulfilled by Jesus and therefore this entire scripture stands as unfulfilled.
