Most Christians, myself included, would read the fulfilled prophecy passages in the New Testament and never think twice about them. Well I see the quote and it seems to be fulfilled in that way so it must be a fullfilled prophecy. The problem is that most of the time the quote doesn't match the passage and/or it's been taken so compeletely out of context that it has thoroughly lost its meaning. When I was in Bible College I would sometimes cross reference a prophecy and discover to my horror that not only was the quote wrong but that the prophecy (when read in context with an open mind) could not, in any way have anything to do with the NT passage. Remember that it's common among charlatan prophets to take bits and pieces out of the OT and make it work for them - Joseph Smith for example has chosen to appropriate virtually all the verses directed at the tribe of Joseph even though those verses could not possible refer to him. You don't need me for this - just pull out your Bible - find a so-called 'fulfilled prophecy' and read the original text in context. It will never jibe. | ![]() |
The standard Christian response is that Jesus fulfilled these prophecies spiritually. This makes no sense and I explain HERE.
Here's a link to about a hundred so-called fulfilled prophecies and me debunking them.
Anyway - here're some examples in order of the NT scripture: (Click on the prophecy below)
Matthew 1:22-23
22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, G-d with us.
Matthew 2: 4-6
4 Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet: 6 `AND YOU, BETHLEHEM, LAND OF JUDAH, ARE BY NO MEANS LEAST AMONG THE LEADERS OF JUDAH; FOR OUT OF YOU SHALL COME FORTH A RULER WHO WILL SHEPHERD MY PEOPLE ISRAEL.' "
Matthew 2:14-15
And he rose and took the child and his mother by night, and departed to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, "Out of Egypt have I called my son."
Matthew 2:16-18
16 Herod was furious when he learned that the wise men had outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, because the wise men had told him the star first appeared to them about two years earlier. 17 Herod's brutal action fulfilled the prophecy of Jeremiah: 18 "A cry of anguish is heard in Ramah - weeping and mourning unrestrained. Rachel weeps for her children, refusing to be comforted - for they are dead."
Matthew 2: 23
23 and went and settled in a town called Nazareth, in order that these words spoken through the Prophets might be fulfilled, "He shall be called a Nazarene."
Matthew 4:12-17
12 When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he left Judea and returned to Galilee. 13 But instead of going to Nazareth, he went to Capernaum, beside the Sea of Galilee, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This fulfilled Isaiah's prophecy: 15 "In the land of Zebulun and of Naphtali, beside the sea, beyond the Jordan River - in Galilee where so many Gentiles live - 16 the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light. And for those who lived in the land where death casts its shadow, a light has shined." 17 From then on, Jesus began to preach, "Turn from your sins and turn to God, because the Kingdom of Heaven is near. "
Matthew 26: 47-50
47 And even as he said this, Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a mob that was armed with swords and clubs. They had been sent out by the leading priests and other leaders of the people. 48 Judas had given them a prearranged signal: "You will know which one to arrest when I go over and give him the kiss of greeting." 49 So Judas came straight to Jesus. "Greetings, Teacher!" he exclaimed and gave him the kiss. 50 Jesus said, "My friend, go ahead and do what you have come for."
Mark 1:1-8
1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: "BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU, WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY; THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, `MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT.' " 4 John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Luke 19: 34-38
34 And the disciples simply replied, "The Lord needs it." 35 So they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it for him to ride on. 36 Then the crowds spread out their coats on the road ahead of Jesus. 37 As they reached the place where the road started down from the Mount of Olives, all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen. 38 "Bless the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in highest heaven!"
